On the 24th of August 2007, the 172-kilometre stretch of Kings Highway 401 (also known as Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) from Glen Miller Road in Trenton to the intersection of the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 404 in Toronto was officially designated as the Highway of Heroes, by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, in honour of Canada’s fallen soldiers.

This section of the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway is the route travelled by motorcades that carry our repatriated soldiers on their final trip from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to Toronto. Along the route thousands of people — local residents, emergency service personnel and veterans — line the highway and gather on the 50 bridges that cross the highway to wave flags and pay their respects as our fallen heroes are driven past.

The “Highway of Heroes” stands as a testament to selflessness; to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
