Dans son Nieuport 17 \u00e0 nez bleu, Bishop n\u2019avait pas son pareil pour ce qui est des aptitudes de pilotage et de tir. On s\u2019en servait dans les tranch\u00e9es et on l\u2019installait \u00e9galement dans les avions pour le combat. Ce biplan tr\u00e8s maniable \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9 d\u2019un moteur rotatif de 110 ch. Les ailes et la majeure partie du fuselage \u00e9taient faites de bois et de toile trait\u00e9e et \u00e9taient soutenues par des c\u00e2bles. Le nez de l\u2019avion de Bishop avait \u00e9t\u00e9 peint d\u2019un bleu distinctif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piloter un avion \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque \u00e9tait en soi une entreprise dangereuse. Le bloc-cylindres rotatif servait de stabilisateur pour l\u2019avion, comme un gyroscope. Le moteur rotatif \u00e9tait courant dans les premiers avions. Pendant bien des ann\u00e9es, la cavalerie avait \u00e9t\u00e9 une arme offensive d\u00e9cisive mais, au cours de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, l\u2019usage des tranch\u00e9es, de l\u2019artillerie et du fil barbel\u00e9 rendit les charges de cavalerie pratiquement impossibles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les a\u00e9rodromes<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c9tant donn\u00e9 que le front pouvait se d\u00e9placer rapidement, les a\u00e9rodromes devaient \u00eatre mobiles. Les hangars \u00e9taient donc cr\u00e9\u00e9s au moyen de grandes tentes de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 pouvoir \u00eatre rapidement assembl\u00e9s, d\u00e9mont\u00e9s ou d\u00e9plac\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avril sanglant<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>En avril 1917, le Royal Flying Corps perdit plus de 200 avions, le pire mois de toute la guerre pour la RFC. Pendant cette p\u00e9riode, un pilote britannique \u00e9tait abattu en moyenne apr\u00e8s 17 heures de vol. Le Nieuport \u00e9tait un \u00ab&nbsp;sesquiplan&nbsp;\u00bb, ce qui signifie qui l\u2019un des ensembles d\u2019ailes \u00e9tait beaucoup plus petit que l\u2019autre. Parfois, simplement en s\u2019approchant d\u2019un avion dans la bonne direction, un pilote pouvait rester cach\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il soit trop tard. Il fallait donc tenir compte de la taille et la position des ailes au moment de concevoir un avion. Des ailes plus grandes rendaient l\u2019avion plus maniable, mais obstruaient une plus grande partie du champ de vision du pilote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les as de l\u2019aviation<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Le terme \u00ab&nbsp;as&nbsp;\u00bb tire ses origines de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Il a fait son apparition dans les journaux fran\u00e7ais, o\u00f9 l\u2019on d\u00e9signait par ce terme les athl\u00e8tes qui connaissaient beaucoup de succ\u00e8s. Il en vint \u00e0 designer tout pilote qui avait abattu cinq avions ennemis ou plus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Albert Ball<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Albert Ball \u00e9tait un as de l\u2019aviation britannique; il a obtenu 44 victoires a\u00e9riennes \u00e0 bord du Nieuport 17 et du&nbsp;Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5.&nbsp;Aux dires de ses camarades, il \u00e9tait un homme relativement solitaire qui aimait jouer du violon et cultiver un petit potager. On pouvait reconna\u00eetre l\u2019avion de Ball par son nez distinctif peint en rouge. Il fut abattu en territoire allemand \u00e0 bord d\u2019un S.E.5, mourut le 7 mai 1917 et fut enterr\u00e9 par les Allemands. Au moment de sa mort, il \u00e9tait le meilleur as de l\u2019aviation britannique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le d\u00e9marrage du moteur<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Le moteur des premiers avions devait \u00eatre mis en marche par un m\u00e9canicien qui faisait tourner l\u2019h\u00e9lice ou les h\u00e9lices. Les automobiles sont dot\u00e9es d\u2019un moteur \u00e9lectrique qui fait \u00ab&nbsp;tourner&nbsp;\u00bb le moteur pour le faire d\u00e9marrer.
