Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisi pour remplacer le Supermarine Stranraer vieillissant. Le Canso pouvait \u00eatre muni de diverses torpilles, de bombes, de charges de profondeur, etc., ce qui en faisait un avion id\u00e9al pour attaquer les U-boot et les sous-marins. Il pouvait emporter une charge maximale de 1 800 kilogrammes (4 000 livres) de bombes et il \u00e9tait en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral arm\u00e9 de mitrailleuses dans le nez, la queue et les coupoles d&rsquo;observation (deux bulles plac\u00e9es au centre de la carlingue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 162<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;Escadron de David Hornell a \u00e9t\u00e9 la seule unit\u00e9 canadienne munie d&rsquo;avions Canso \u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9ploy\u00e9e en dehors de l&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique du Nord; il faisait des patrouilles au-dessus de l&rsquo;Atlantique \u00e0 partir de bases situ\u00e9es en Islande et en \u00c9cosse. Ces avions pouvaient franchir de grandes distances et rester dans les airs pendant de tr\u00e8s longues p\u00e9riodes.
